Many of our customers return several times a year with their families to target the variety of species that migrate in and out of the Chesapeake Bay. Our corporate outings provide a perfect opportunity to build lasting business relationships or simply enjoy a unique team build experience on the waters of the Chesapeake Bay, aboard a first-class Chesapeake Bay Charter Boat operation.
Our crew takes pride in maintaining all fishing tackle to the highest standard, as well as keeping the 50-foot Wound Tight in immaculate condition. We are excited to introduce our new and returning customers to the brand new, 50-foot Wound Tight.
The Boat
The new 50’x16’ Wound Tight was delivered in September 2018 and combines the style of a custom Sportfisher with the stable platform of a custom Chesapeake Bay Deadrise Charter Boat. As soon as you approach from the dock you will be immediately impressed by the sheer size of this boat. The Wound Tight is far from the traditional narrow, low freeboard Chesapeake Bay built boat. Her roomy cockpit measures 20’ long by 16’ wide, which easily makes the Wound Tight the most spacious Chesapeake Bay Charter fishing boat in our area.
Twin 500 horsepower Cummins Diesel engines easily push the Wound Tight to speeds over 20kts, which means she has no problem reaching the fishing grounds before the rest of the fleet. The engines rest below deck, keeping engine noise to a subtle level and the efficient electronic engines make diesel exhaust smell nonexistent.
As you enter the climate-controlled salon you will find a galley area to starboard. This is the perfect place to make a sandwich inside while keeping a close eye on the action out back in the cockpit. Forward of the galley is the state of the art helm station featuring a Furuno Radar, GPS Chartplotter, Fishfinder as well as ICOM marine VHF radios. These are all vital tools that ensure your Chesapeake Bay Charter Fishing Trip is as safe and successful as possible.
If you’d like to take a break from the action you can have a seat at our roomy dinette seat, located to port, inside of the salon. We designed our aft salon window to allow for an unobstructed view between the dinette and cockpit, so you don’t have to miss any of the excitement while you recharge in comfort. Our dinette seats can accommodate 10 passengers.
If you make your way through the main salon, down to the lower cabin area, you will find a bunk area adjacent to the separately enclosed bathroom (Head). This isn’t your usual cramped head. We don’t recommend it, but you could easily fit 4 people in this room at one time, just to give you the idea. The additional bunk area provides additional seating space for up to 6 passengers.
The New Wound Tight is big, fast and comfortable and if that doesn’t get you excited about your next Chesapeake Bay Charter Fishing Trip, you may just want to consider a hiking trip! All joking aside, we can’t wait to have you experience the New Wound Tight!
What’s Biting?
April and early May: The Season begins typically on the third Saturday of April. This early season is considered the Chesapeake Bay Spring Trophy Season, as we target post-spawn Striped Bass as they exit the bay in route to ocean water of the mid-Atlantic region. Striped bass caught during this time can reach over 50”. Book early for this season, dates fill in the beginning of each new year.
May: As the trophy fish exit, our resident Striped Bass begin migrating to their summer holds. Plenty of action during this time as other species move into our area. White Perch move back to the shallow areas making them easy target for bottom fisherman. Black Drum also move through the area during their Northern migration and can be caught in late May. Depending on temperatures, Norfolk Spot can also be present for anglers working the bottom.
June – July: We continue to target Striped Bass during this time. If the Norfolk Spot fish are available they make great bait for live-lining, the bass can’t resist! Bottom fishing for Perch and spot is very popular during this time and are a great way to introduce anglers to the sport of fishing, they are super fun to catch for all ages and angling prowess. Bluefish typically enter our region during this time and usually show in good numbers by the 4th of July. We have been on a Hardhead (Croaker) drought, but they are a cyclic migrator, check for availability for night fishing for these tasty bottom dwellers.
August: Stripers are still the main target and while the sizes run on the smaller size, the action is still very consistent with limit catches being met. Bottom fishing for Perch and Spot peak during the month of August and continue through the month. Bluefish, Spanish Mackerel are targeted heavily during this time. Typically the Blues, Macs and Stripers school together and provide consistent action by either trolling and casting around the schools that are feeding on the surface.
September: Bottom fishing for Spot and Perch is still very good at this time. Striped bass fishing is still an option but most anglers choose to take advantage of other species like blues, Spanish Mackerel, Red Drum, and the occasional Cobia, you don’t catch them unless you try!
October – December: The Fall Striped Bass run is highly anticipated and dates fill up when the leaves start to change color. Schools of chunky stripers are on the move feeding on forage fish that are beginning their late season migrations. Trolling and jigging are options during this time (depending on charter size) and the excitement of seeing birds work the surface over schools of breaking stripers really gets the heart pounding. It’s not out of the ordinary to see a large migratory striper during this time either, the largest striped bass caught aboard Wound Tight was landed in early December.
